Last February the composted kitchen waste was mixed with soil in some of my planters.

A few seeds of small radish I casted in the soil sprouted to have two tiny leaves but unfortunately they did not grow any bigger.

I am planning to grow cucumbers in that soil.

This is my first time culturing soil. I was usually buying gardening soil at a store. So I wonder if cucumbers can grow in the soil or not.

As I hear that it is good to spread calcareous fertilizer before planting cucumber seeds, I did it about ten days ago. Using commercially available seeding pots, I am now waiting for the seeds to germinate. When the nursery plants have two or three leaves grow leaves in the pots, they are supposed to be planted in that soil.

But I am anxious.

When the pH test strip was dipped into the purified water added the soil, it showed yellow (or slightly light green included?)

Although the appropriate pH of soil for growing cucumber is 5.5-7.0, this simple test strip cannot tell an accurate figure.

Still, I am full of anxiety…

Anyway, try it!

In a similar way, rice bran is being cultured in my kitchen to produce Nukazuke (rice bran pickles). It is impossible to see what kinds of microbes are living in the rice bran bed at the moment but the home made Nukazuke pickles are really tasty and necessary for my breakfast.
